Flash Fiction And Everyday Life

I was a graduate student in the writing program at the University of Pittsburgh from 2003 to 2006.  I got to teach composition, fiction writing and short story writing to Pitt undergraduates from 2004 to 2006.

A lot of students in my fiction and short story writing classes would turn in narratives full of outrageous people and exotic places, people they had never met and places they had never been to.

The stories of these imaginative writers were full of holes.  There have been great stories written by writers who write about people and places they do not come across in real life; but I always encouraged my students to write about the kinds of people they really knew and the kinds of places they had really been to.  And flash fiction is perfect for this kind of writing.

Welcome to my blog.  It is a blog published by a flash fiction writer for other flash fiction writers.  Explore the site.  Hopefully, you will find here inspiration for your own short stories.

This is the Old Soldier blogging out of North Oakland near the main campus of University of Pittsburgh.

What Flash Fiction Can Teach Us

Lindsay Lohan

Let’s start this article with a photo of  Lindsay Lohan topless…Okay.

Good flash fiction is fun to read and fun to write; but for the short story writer, flash fiction is more than just entertainment.  It is schooling.  And it is wonderful schooling.

Flash fiction teaches a writer to take raw reality and turn it into workable flash fiction ideas.

Flash fiction teaches the flash fiction writer to be aware and to use the denotative and the connotative power of words.

Flash fiction teaches the flash fiction writer that he or she must use the right word in the right place.

Flash fiction teaches the flash fiction writer that one superfluous word is one word too many.

Writing flash fiction is about the mastery of written language.  Continue your journey as a flash fiction writer by clicking on this link: My Ebook for Serious Writers.

Writing Cannot Be Taught

Okay, today the Old Soldier is going to give you some tough love.  I can’t teach you to be a better writer.  No one can.  I can point the way.  I can give you examples of good writing.  But I cannot give you the love of good writing or the need to do good writing.

And that’s right.  If you want to do good writing it can’t be a hobby.  It must be a need.  You must need to be a good writer.

I’m sorry to be the one to tell you.  If you just “like” to write this blog is not for you.  If you “need” to write, let me welcome you to the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette.

Don’t miss an issue.  The free subscription tab is at the top of the page.

And if you want to move your writing to the next level overnight, download my Ebook of “show don’t tell” fiction.  The Ebook tab is at the top of the page, too.
