The Old Soldier has had a busy day. I got off a nice long post earlier this morning. Then instead of taking a walk down to the main campus of the University of Pittsburgh and through Schenley Park to find the house where Andy Warhol grew up I decided to visit my younger brother in the assistant living facility that he is in about a 30-minute walk from my apartment building.
I had my plastic water bottle full of ice and I sipped on it as I enjoyed the warm weather and the sunshine.
He didn’t have much to say. I guess when you live in a place like he does for so many years you get pretty isolated. I’m 65 and live on my own but it is a constant struggle for me not to get isolated. If you are retired with limited funds it’s easy to get isolated. That’s why when I do have the funds I attend karaoke on Friday nights at Del’s and I’m really looking forward to becoming more involved with The Big Idea Bookstore and Cafe that is only a few blocks from my apartment building and carries the only book I’ve ever written.
After I left my brother the Old Soldier marched back to his apartment, scraped together a few dollars and then marched in to Bloomfield (Pittsburgh’s Little Italy) and had a couple of beers at Armand’s at the bar as he watched a little of an Eddie Murphy film he had never seen before.
Then I marched back to my apartment to put up this post. That was a lot of marching in the hot sun, but it got me out of the house and gave me something to blog about.

Whatever Happened To The Occupy Movement?
Kim Kardashian (Photo credit: BiggerPictureImages.com)
Kim Kardashian
Live by the media; die by the media. If Kim Kardashian couldn’t get the media to swarm over her there would be no Kim Kardashian. That would make a lot of people happy. And a lot of people would be happy if the Occupy Movement would just go away, too. Well, the 1% would be happy.
But unlike Kim Kardashian, the movement can no longer depend on grabbing media attention by occupying property that belongs to other people in order to get its message out to the public. Now the movement has to do the mundane work of community organizing.
Can the Occupy Movement get the 99% to vote for its own best interests? Only time will tell.

Investing In The 99%
The Old Soldier is working-class and retired. I have few funds to invest in the Occupy Movement; but I want to do my part.
I will be investing more time and a little of my discretionary funds in The Big Idea Bookstore and Cafe. The store carries the only book that I have written. The store is only about six blocks from my apartment building; and most importantly it is owned by the workers, the 99%.

Port Authority To Raise Basic Bus Fare
Here’s some local news. On Sunday the basic fare to ride Port Authority, the public bus transportation system in Allegheny County, will go up to $2.50. The local mainstream media reports that only six other cities in the United States will then have a higher fare for public transportation than the City of Pittsburgh.
