The Old Soldier got rejection notices throughout his 20s, 30s and 40s until in his 50s a local newspaper weekly published every flash fiction story and every article about writing that he submitted and the University of Pittsburgh awarded him a writing fellowship to the graduate program that was worth more than $60,000.
