There are a few publications that pay for flash fiction but what they pay is dirt. There is only one way to make money writing flash fiction. Use flash fiction to get a job.
Most cities have small weeklies that are always looking for content to print. If you can supply a steady flow (once or twice a month) of well written flash fiction, this will prove to the editor or publisher that you can write. After having established this relationship of trust, a polite inquiry about a position on the staff just may turn into a job offer even if it’s only part time. A part-time position can lead to other opportunities.
This happened to me. After having several of my flash fiction stories published by The Front, a free weekly in Pittsburgh, I was offered the position of Fiction Editor. Free publications generate money on advertisements. The amount of money advertisers pay a publication is based on the size of the readership. My flash fiction stories helped to bring readers to The Front.
Unfortunately, the publication went under before I could take up my duties. That’s life…

Writing: The Most Important Trait For Success
Image via Wikipedia
What would you say is the most important trait that a writer should have for success? If you said perseverance, the Old Soldier agrees with you.
It takes time for a writer to learn enough about the craft of writing to reach any level of success. The Old Soldier got rejection notices throughout his 20s, 30s and 40s until in his 50s a local newspaper weekly published every flash fiction story and every article about writing that he submitted and the University of Pittsburgh awarded him a writing fellowship to the graduate program that was worth more than $60,000.
True story.
