Life, Joy, Pain And The Words Of A Writer

We writers have a wonderful vocation.  We try to capture life with our words.  And life is made up of joy and pain.

We use our words to share our particular vision of life.  It’s a struggle to be a writer, but the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette is here to support you.

It is here to support you with entertainment, practical advice about how to write flash fiction, emotional support and at times with publication.

This blog continues to evolve.  It began as the journal of a baby boomer.  It is now a full-fledged magazine.

Come along for the ride.

Karaoke: The Advantages Of Memorizing The Words

The Old Soldier had a great time at karaoke last night at Nico’s in Little Italy.  The following is what I wrote in my little pocket notepad as I sat at the bar and waited for my name to be called to go sing in the dinning room.

This advice is not for the casual karaoke singer.  The casual karaoke singer ( if I may quote that great American philosopher Cyndi Lauper) just wants to have fun.  That’s perfectly understandable.

I’m speaking to the karaoke singer who wants to be more than just a karaoke singer.  I’m speaking to the singer who wants to be a performance artist.

The essence of being a karaoke performance artist is to memorize the words of a few songs so that you do not have to watch the monitor.  I’ve been in many karaoke bars where the monitor is set up so that the singer will always have his or her back to all or part of the audience during the song.  That sucks!

When you don’t have to watch the monitor you don’t have to think about the lyrics.  And when you don’t have to think about the lyrics you are already working on a level beyond every singer in the bar who has to watch the lyrics.

Suddenly, you can keep eye contact with your audience.  You can move and groove and be yourself.  You can turn karaoke into a concert.

Words, Life And The Creative Writer

We writers use words to capture life.  No secret there; but it is not an easy job.

Earlier today, I walked to Armand’s in Little Italy.  It was sunny and mild (70s).  Life was all around me: people walking, jogging, traffic, workmen at work on a roof; I’ve noticed that young women and not so young women have taken to wearing pants that seem to be tights.  Maybe they are tights.  The shape, bounce and wiggle of the female butt is on full display in Pittsburgh.  I wonder if this fashion is popular in other cities too or is it just something particular to Pittsburgh.

I sat at the bar in Armand’s, drank beer and talked to Joe the bartender.  Several other people sat at the bar.

Beyond the big window, Liberty Avenue was alive with people and sunshine. I got one last mug of beer and then a six-pack of beer to go.

I should do a column on beer for this blog.  I should subscribe to a magazine for beer drinkers.

I had not eaten anything.  So, I was looking forward to a bowl of hot ham and lima beans that I recently cooked in my crock pot.

This writer walked back home, eager to get back to work.
