Writers, Make An Investment In Your Own Writing Talent

The Old Soldier use to study the stock market.  I’m not kidding.  I even bought some stock; but that didn’t last long.  I couldn’t keep making the $50.00 a month investment.  That was the deal.  I had to invest $50.00 every month.

My short career as an investor did not go to waste.  The Old Soldier took the advice of the most successful and celebrated investors and he applied it to being a writer.

I would invest in my writing talent.

Any successful investment strategy is built on knowledge of the field, investing skill and taking the long view.  You really do have to do your homework.  Not just invest but study the companies you are investing in.

And you must be willing to learn from the successful investors who are recognized as the best at what they do.

In other words, a writer must do exactly what successful investors do.

And with a little luck, your investment will eventually begin to pay off.

Writers, The Public Library Is Your Friend

Woman As Art

Woman As Art

The Old Soldier cannot afford to buy books like he use to.  So, I borrow books from the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.

The main-branch of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh is about a 20-minute walk from my apartment building.  I borrow biographies, histories and I sit in the reading room and read the latest issues of magazines that interest me.

It’s nice and quiet in the library.  I usually sit at a table to read; but there are plenty of thick, comfortable chairs to read in and to doze off in.

The Carnegie Museum is next to the library which is next to Schenley Park which is next to the main campus of the University of Pittsburgh.  On warm, sunny days I can read, check out a book or two and then go for a nice long walk through the park.

When I’m back in my apartment and stretched out on the sofa with one of my books from the public library, I know that I’m still growing as a writer.

Writers, The Good News About Life Without Television

When my television went on the blink I wondered, what in the world would I do with all my free time?  The Old Soldier is happy to report that life without television is working out just fine.

I listen to a lot more radio (talk shows, the news, old comedy and drama and baseball).  I’ve taken up a form of meditation.  I have more time to blog.  And most important of all, I have more time to read.

There are usually two or three books from the public library on the floor next to the sofa.

Now I’m not suggesting you should throw your television in the trash; I am suggesting that if your television does go on the blink, life without television is not a disaster.

Keep reading and keep writing that flash fiction.
