Teaching Flash Fiction

Yes, the Old Soldier taught flash fiction writing to undergraduate students at the University of Pittsburgh from 2005 to 2006.  I was a graduate student on a K. LeRoy Irvis Fellowship.

Flash fiction was new to most of my students.  Most of them did not want to be writers.  They just needed a writing credit.  Several of my students turned out to be very talented writers.

I gave my students three parameters to write their very short stories by.

  • Use specific concrete sense details
  • No unnecessary words
  • Each character must have his or her own agenda

These parameters still hold true for any creative writer who wants to write flash fiction.
