When I read reports that the porn industry makes more money than the music industry and the movie industry combined, I was stunned. Not at the amount of money, but I was stunned at what this says about American culture.
Millions of married couples and boyfriends and girlfriends enjoy porn videos together. It gets them primed for the real thing. Young women willingly participate in porn videos. The vast majority of sites on the Internet are porn sites. And now I even offer porn flash fiction by email under my Adults Only tab at the top of the page. Pornography has become mainstream.
When I was a young man there was no video pornography. But we did have written pornography. As a very young man I remember reading Tropic of Capricorn and Tropic of Cancer which were considered filthy. Now in many literary circles they are considered breakthrough novels. Oh, and let’s not forget The Story of O and Lady Chatterley’s Lover.
Can porn ever be art? I’ll leave it up to the bloggers, creative writers and Flash Fiction Fanatics who visit the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette.
